Information Architect
Boston University Networked Information Services
July 2004 to October 2006
Boston University's Networked Information Services (NIS) provides web services to the entire University community. NIS designs websites, builds applications, teaches, and introduces new web technologies.
I joined NIS to fill a new position as information architect. One of the functions of this position was to improve the development process, specifically in the areas of project management, design processes, and usability. My efforts contributed to project teams understanding and adhering better to project goals with my introduction of scope definitions, project plans, requirements, and functional mockups. Some of my responsibilities in this area include:
- analyzing client needs and designing site structures and interfaces that solve user problems
- conducting brainstorm, design, and client review meetings
- coordinating development efforts with designers and developers to ensure that objectives and schedules are met
- performing heuristic analysis and assisting developers in solving information design problems
I developed several prominent sites on the BU Web, including:
- Computing Web, the gateway site for the University's information technology support resources
- Faculty Central, a collection of links to services in support of teaching, research, and professional development for University faculty
- Staff Central, a collection of links to services and information resources for all University employees
In addition to my responsibilities in website and application development, I developed, edited, and organized content in the NIS Knowledge Base. The Knowledge Base consists of several sites and hundreds of pages, in the form of FAQs, tutorials, and internal procedures. I ensured consistency in style, presentation, terminology, and convention. I have developed online courses, including Google Search Engine Optimization and RSS News Feeds.
