The News CMS uses the following terms:
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| archive date | The archive date is the date on which the news item will be removed from headline groups in which it has appeared. If you do not set an archive date, the item will appear until newer items "push" the item out of the headline group. If you enter an archive date, the date must be entered as m/d/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy. The time fields are optional. |
| author | When you add a news item, the Author field is prepopulated with the your name. You can select a different name, select Staff, or select Byline to enter a name manually. Note: The Author field is available only for specific departments. |
| body | The body is the main text of a news item. |
| department | A department is any group publishing news items. A department may be academic or administrative. Each department is responsible for managing its own news items. |
| feature image | A feature image is used by specific departments to display images on their homepages. |
| headline | The headline appears as the link to the news item in headline groups, in your news archive, and on the news item itself. The headline may contain the <em> HTML tag, so you can italicize words. |
| headline group | A headline group is a group of news item titles that appear in a list on a web page, typically a department's homepage. Headline groups can be customized to display any of the information stored for news items. If you need help with changes to a headline group, contact NIS. |
| headline thumbnail | A headline thumbnail appears beside a headline in headline group or in other lists of headlines, such as on your news archive. Note: Your site's templates must be configured to display headline thumbnails. |
| image | An image appears in the body of a news item. News items can have multiple images, depending on how your site's templates are configured. |
| news archive | The news archive is a single page listing all news items that have been created by your department. Visitors to your site can search for a specific item or browse items by topic. If you need help with changes to your news archive page, contact NIS. |
| news item | A news item is any announcement, news story, or other piece of information that a department wants to publish on the BU Web. |
| news item page | The news item page displays an individual news item and is based on your site's template. If you need help with changes to your news item page, contact NIS. |
| publish date | The publish date is the date on which the news item will appear in headline groups on your website and on your news archive, providing that it has been approved. You can select that items be published "immediately when approved" or enter a specific publish date. If you enter a publish date, the date must be entered as m/d/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy. The time fields are optional. |
| short headline | When you enter a headline that is longer than 80 characters, you also must enter a short version of the headline. When the headline is longer than 80 characters, the short headline will be displayed on pages where the full headline would be too long. |
| status | Every news item has one of the following statuses:
|
| subheading | The subheading contains secondary title information, similar to a slug in a newspaper article. This information can be used to provide a description of the news item when it appears in a list of items. The information will appear on pages that have been configured to display this information. This field is optional. |
| topic | When you add a news item, you must assign it to one or more topics. Topics allow you to categorize news items by subject matter. For example, the Athletics department could assign a game report to the Women's Lacrosse topic. If you place an item in a child topic, it will be available for the parent topic as well. For example, a news item assigned to the Women's Lacrosse topic would be available also for Women's Sports (the parent topic) and Athletics (the main topic). Visitors to your site's news archive can browse news items by topic. |
