Editing News Items
To edit a news item, find the item by viewing or searching and click its headline. The Edit News Item page will appear.
Note: If another user has the item open for editing, you will not be able to edit it. See item locking.
To edit the item, follow these steps:
- Modify the topics for which the item should appear. Note: If you select a subtopic, the item will appear also for the topics to which the subtopic belongs on your site's news archive.
- Change the headline (required). If you enter a headline longer than 80 characters, you must also enter a short headline. See Entering Headlines.
- Enter a subheading (optional).
- Select a new author from the list. If the author is someone other than yourself, select that person in the Author list. If your department uses "Staff," select Staff from the bottom of the list. If you select Byline, the byline field becomes available and you can enter a name manually; this name will appear for the Author field in your site's templates. Note: The Author field is available only for specific departments.
- Modify the brief description (optional).
- Edit the body of the item (required). See Formatting Text.
- Click one or more of the image buttons to upload a new image for the item. Note: You must remove an existing headline thumbnail or feature image before you can replace it. See Adding Images.
- Change the status. Note: You must be an administrator to be able to select the Approved or Unpublished statuses.
- Modify the publish date (required). To have the item published immediately after it is approved, select "Immediately when approved" to publish the item on a specific date after it is approved, select the second option and enter a date. See Publishing News Items.
- Modify the archive date )optional). See Publishing News Items.
- To spell-check content in the Headline, Brief Description, and Body fields, click Spell. The spell checker opens in a pop-up window.
- To preview the news item on your news item page, click Preview. The preview opens in a new window.
- Click Save to save the item. The Edit News Item page closes and the View page is displayed, showing the item you just edited.
Note: If your browser is set to block pop-up ads, you may need to allow pop-ups for the News CMS in order to see the Preview window. See your browser or ad-blocker documentation for more information.
